Nope, you've caught us, we're lying. this entire thing is a front to cover collusion of government authorities, space aliens and large corporations.
Yes, gender variant people face frequent harassment, discrimination and violence in public restrooms. Something as simple as trying to use a toilet can become a nightmarish ordeal, being forced to show ID, detained or even arrested. Some may not identify within the male / female binary and feel alienated in public bathrooms. This site offers a community-driven resource to allow people to locate safe bathrooms within their communities. Gender neutral and single stall bathrooms can benefit others as well: parents with children, those with access or mobility needs and those who desire extra privacy are a few who may benefit.
We offer this resource to support needs in the present and believe that through advocacy we can create wider adoption of gender free bathrooms, help to curb state-sanctioned and institutional violence through community organizing, education, and legal protections for gender identity.
Unfortunately, the people behind safe2pee have to pay their rent, and only limited time to work on this site. Generally speaking you can expect updates on fridays. You may email us suggestions at info at safe2pee dot org. We take user suggestions seriously and are building a variety of exciting and new community oriented and suggested features into the site! Stay tuned.
The other option is to take our data and build it yourself. We are by no means omnipotent and though we build based upon input, we cannot do everything. That said our data is available for you to take, alter and transform as you see fit
Yes, although it is currently a manual process! You can send us a comma separated text file to us at info at safe2pee dot org. Please be sure to include (at a minimum) the following --- place name, type of bathroom, street address, city, state and accessibility (0 = not accessable, 1 = accessable). Longitude, Latitude, comment and directions fields are also appreciated!
Great! This is very easy to do and customizable
From here you can do one of two things .... save the page source and copy it to your site to reproduce it there, OR link to that location! We're going to add more customizable options, so you should be able to adjust the zoom and other things too --- this process will be streamlined soon. Let us know if you'd like some help!
We currently have some issues relating to adding college buildings, and we are actively trying to figure out the best way to handle them. Here's the low-down: Our service attempts to geocode (that is, find the latitude and longitude) any location you enter, so that it can be displayed on a map. The issue with college buildings is that even the best mapping and geocoding engines out there cannot pin-point most college buildings without a street address.
The best way to resolve this is to find a street address for the particular building in question. Though the mailing address for most offices and halls on a university campus may be hall name followed by the university, most do have actual street addresses. Such a technique has been used to add records in our directory for the University of Oregon, San Francisco State University!
There are a few good ways to go about finding the address (or an approximate). The first is to look at a campus map for streets or nearby alleyways, then search the campus site and/or google for that street and the building name. If you cannot find it, perhaps use an approximate location for the university, or take the address of a nearby business and add/subtract 1 or two from that address. Let us know if you need any additional help or have a great idea on this one!
yes, please! safe2pee.org is copyleft, which means that it's a community resource for everyone. you can reproduce or transform the pages/data almost anyway you'd like, but if you distribute your work you have to do so under the same terms that we do (basically, you have to allow others to take your work and transform ot). So that said, full specs on the license, creative commons sharealike. The software behind this site uses in part various open source gpl projects and will be released under that license when it's deemed stable/bug free.
If you are going to be making a lot of queries to our site for a project we'd love it if you'd let us know, we can probably make the process faster/easier for you and less of a load on our server! we appreciate (but never require) hearing what you are going to do with our scripts and data (because we like to brag and promote things).
We're also working to make this whole process very easy with various feeds, etc.
So the story goes something like this: Back in Fall 06 there was a really bored queer. Ze had a lot of extra days off, and roaming corners of san francisco by bicycle, was in need of safe (gender neutral) places to pee. Ze remembered reading about PISSR years before, but was not able to find the site anymore, and could not contact the great people behind it.... and so the idea occurred to create a fun, new dynamic gender neutral bathroom resource! The project grew as the community added hundreds of bathrooms and others joined, wanting to work to add more features and improve the site. A small collective now collaborates on the web site
Great, we'd love to hear from you, and there are lots of ways you can help. Here are a few suggestions:
